How to draw mermaids

Mermaids are something that I love drawing. They are magical, beautiful creatures. Mermaids are often half fish, half person and can change into humans when they reach land.

Today I will be giving some tips on drawing these amazing creatures. This tutorial includes images, videos, and much more!

Tips and Tricks for drawing Mermaids!

The first thing you should know about drawing mermaids is their body proportions. Their tails will usually begin at the waist and then go down all the way to where human feet would be, where their tail fin begins.

Next, drawing underwater hair! I’ve got images to show you guys this time!

Speed also affects underwater hair. The faster it is, the straighter and more dramatically forced to one side the hair will be.

For drawing scales, there are several different ways to do it. The first way is to simply draw out every single scale on their tail. This is a time consuming method, though, and there are many other ways to draw scales. The second is to draw clumps of scales everywhere. This gives the sense of scaliness along the tail without actually having to draw out every single tiny scale. The last one is a method I picked up from the YouTuber Love2DrawManga. (https://www.youtube.com/c/Love2DrawManga) This method is to use airbrushes to give the tail a feeling of texture and then to make the airbrush smaller and create small dots that add to the affect of scales. I really like this method!

That’s all for the drawing part! Now it’s time to move on to designing!!

Designing Mermaids

When designing mermaids, there are many things to take in mind. I will go over all of them in this post.

The first thing to add to your mermaid are fins. You can add fins on the sides of the tail, you can make them act as a dorsal fin, or you could even put some on their arms! It’s all up to you!

Next would be the tail fin. Tail fins can look like a shark’s, a dolphin’s, a fish, or even something like a jellyfish! When I design mermaids, I always make sure to pull up a reference photo of the sea creature I want to copy. This is intregal to making creative designs.

And finally, creative mermaid hairstyles! For ideas, you can look in places like Pinterest! I often use Pinterest to find stunning hairstyle ideas, as well as mermaid tails. YouTube is also an option for looking for ideas.

Included below this text is a template for designing mermaids! I hope you found this post useful! Comment for any other things you might need tips on.
