Discover Your Art Style in 3 EASY Steps!
As an artist, no matter where you are on your art journey, you probably struggle with stylistic choices and how you can draw in a style that you love.
In this comprehensive blog post, I aim to show you how you can achieve this!
Find other artists that inspire you
The first step to uncovering your unique art style is to identify the artists whose artwork you connect with or enjoy looking at. This can be artists you have been following for a while or it could be an artist you’ve just discovered while searching.
Whatever the case, it’s good to find at least three, though of course more or less are acceptable as well.
For this step, I’ll introduce to you the artists that I get inspired by.
So now that you know what you should be looking for, search through your socials to find these artists, and then build a list of the ones you like best!
Define what you like about the artists’ styles
Once you’ve made your list of artists, look at each one and figure out exactly what it is about their art that you like. It can be one single thing or it may be multiple aspects!
While you’re doing this, it’s best to make another list of the stylistic choices you like from each of these styles.
For my example, I’m going to use Bluebiscuits’ art style.
What I love about Bluebiscuit’s art style is the painterly rendering style, the body proportions, and the way she draws certain facial features.
Since I’ve identified which areas of the art I like, I can add that to my list of stylistic choices I enjoy!
Do this for all of the artists you listed previously as well. For Carles Dalmau, I like the body proportions, the big eyes, and the backgrounds. For Marikyuun I feel drawn to the characters’ big eyes and her persona’s thick eyebrows!
Combine it all into your unique style
The final step is to take all of the characteristics you listed in Step 2 and combine them into one art style!
First, you should think of the proportions, sketching them out on a sheet of paper. For my style, I try to create a combination of Bluebiscuit’s art style proportions and Carles Dalmau’s.
Next, I focused on the facial features, making the eyes larger than the standard anime art style. At this point, you need to take every aspect of the other artists’ styles and turn them into your own style.
Feel free to also experiment with the slight differences in the character!
Also be aware that as time passes, your art style will gradually change due to your interests also changing. For instance, in a couple of months, you may find a new artist whose style you admire or a video game, etc. So, be open to various style changes in the future!
