Sketch to Finish: Art Commission
Sketch
I started out with a really rough sketch and, using the references given to me by the client, started mapping out a concept for this painting.
Cleanup Sketch
Next, I outlined the smaller details and proportions of the character design. I also fixed small mistakes I noticed while drawing, and mapped out the shading areas with a lowered opacity color!
Color Mapping
To map out the colors, I used the same lowers opacity brush to fill in some areas. This helps me visualize things better.
Base Colors
I then drew in the actual base colors, keeping them flat in order to shade them easier.
Background/Rendering
And finally, I drew the background and background effects, then started working on rendering.
For the lighting part, I used layer modes and two colors: a warm color for the shading, and a cool color for highlights. I spent a lot of time color picking and cleaning up any messiness or weird proportions I saw.
A good tip while rendering is to use a thinner brush!
And above is the finished result, I hope you enjoyed this post and learned a few things from it!
