I draw your ocs—7
This week, I drew two of the original characters that were submitted to me.
Each and every one of these characters was unique and super cool. If your OC did not get picked this time around, it will still be eligible for next time!
Choosing OCs
As you know, I choose the characters randomly with a wheel.
The first OC was #12, which was a character named Muna that was sent in by Muna Sketches.
I was surprised when I found out that I got another one from this artist since I had already drawn one of their OCs- Bush- in I Draw Your OC #5. To make up for that fact, I spun the wheel once more and drew a second character.
The wheel landed on the number 2, which is Potato Guy by Giraffegirl. The creator has a webcomic called “Love is Among Us.” I recently began reading it and it truly is a masterpiece! I recommend this comic to everybody!
Potato Guy is a cross between a giraffe, a ninja, a potato, and an among-us character. It’s really cute, and I couldn’t wait to draw it!
Video
Here’s a video version of the OC drawings. The video includes less explanation of my process, but I still recommend watching it!
OC #1
The first OC I drew was Muna. The artist gave me lots of information on this character, so I was thrilled to start working on the illustration! Okay, let’s all take a deep breath because this is a lot of information:
Muna is 21, and she is tall (like all other moon people). She is half Luna Goddess and is one of the many children of the Luna Goddess. The artist also made a special effort to let me know that Muna isn’t overpowered, so I included that in there. She is quiet and has many shy habits. Muna loves a little adventure, too. She longs to see other moons but is banned to go there. She also really likes moon animals.
Once I received this information, I immediately began planning the layout of the illustration. I was particularly pulling elements from her love of moon creatures and her want to see other moons as I was planning this.
The plan was to have Muna standing on her moon and looking up at the sky, maybe staring at another moon, thinking about going there. Since there were no images of moon animals, I went ahead and designed my own, based on what I thought one would look like. I drew a rabbit with an antenna and a crescent moon on its forehead, matching the one on Muna’s face. I also added a small indication of shyness or maybe nervousness where Muna’s hand is clutching her other arm.
Once I had the initial sketch in, I used paintbrushes to fill in the base tone for Muna’s skin. I then used many different colors to shade. There is a light source on the middle-right side of the drawing, casting shadows on the far left and far right where the light does not reach. I imagined that the light may be coming from the moon she was looking at.
After painting the skin, I moved on to the eyes and facial features. Muna has white eyelashes, so I used an off-white to paint them. I enjoyed painting the minor details of the face.
Next, I began painting in the hair. Muna has messy white hair that made me feel happy drawing. Shading was a bit difficult, though, as I was having trouble making her hair actually look like hair. I love the split in the middle of the hair because it looks really cute!
Next, I painted Muna’s clothes and the animal on her shoulder. I don’t have much to say about the two because it didn’t take me very long to complete and there weren’t any problems in the process, so now I’ll talk about making the background.
For the background, I used speckled brushes and luminance brushes on Procreate for the added effect of space. As I was almost finished, I looked at my drawing and thought, “Hmm, something’s missing.” I soon realized that the background looked quite empty and quickly painted a planet in the background. I also blurred the background for finishing touches.
Recently, I’ve been expirementing with using no line art in my pieces, and I’m pretty happy with the result so far!
OC #2
Now on to the second character!!
I couldn’t get over how cute Potato Guy was. I was thinking to myself, “How on earth do I go about drawing something so cute?!” I couldn’t think of any way to draw it, and ended up looking on Medibang for inspiration. After searching around for a while, I came across an adorable sketch of the Genshin character, Aether, in chibi style. Aether was being held in the palm of a giant hand. I thought this was so cute, I decided to draw Potato Guy like that!
This drawing didn’t take me very long, so I wont be showing any work-in-progress images. I simply drew out Potato Guy in someone’s hand, then painted everything and added simple shading with an airbrush. For finishing touches, I hopped into Ibis Paint x and used one of the free-to-use pre-made backgrounds to add and I was done!
